The Last Freier of Milpitas

Ronen Bar-Lev's mother calls every Sunday at 8 a.m., which is 6 p.m. in Haifa [4, 5], and every Sunday she asks the same question: Nu, are they still walking all over you there?

This morning he tells her the truth. He is standing in line at the farmers market [1, 2] behind a woman debating the moral character of two nectarines, and he has been standing there for nine minutes.

"Nine minutes," his mother repeats, the way a doctor repeats a symptom. "For fruit."

"There's a line, Ima."

"There's always a line. The line is a suggestion. The line is for tourists and for—" She doesn't finish it. She doesn't have to. The word hangs over the Pacific like weather: freier [9, 12]. Sucker. Chump [10]. The man who pays the sticker price. The man who waits.

He hangs up. The nectarine woman resolves her crisis. Ronen advances eleven inches.

Then a guy in cycling shorts materializes beside him — not behind him, beside him, at that precise diagonal that is not technically cutting but is unmistakably cutting — and says "I just have a quick question for the vendor," and asks his quick question, and buys four pounds of apricots.

Ronen says nothing. Ronen smiles at him. Ronen even says, no worries, man.

Somewhere in Haifa a woman sits up in bed for no reason she can name.

Here is the thing nobody in his family understands. Ronen has done the math. In eighteen years in Milpitas [2, 3] he has lost, by his own estimate, four hundred and six hours to lines. Four hundred and six hours of standing still while other men in cycling shorts move through the world like water finding a crack. Sociological consensus suggests that this "freier phobia" is a highly rational, protective defense mechanism forged in volatile environments where a weak social contract leaves the rule-abiding vulnerable to exploitation [10, 11]. To his family, submitting to the queue is a naive surrender [11]. Yet Ronen has committed to a different calculus.

In those same eighteen years: he knows the name of the woman who sells the eggs [3]. He knows her son had a kidney thing in 2019. The tamale guy hands him the pork ones without asking. The man who runs the stone fruit stand — Vasquez, sixty-something, forearms like fence posts [3] — has never once said hello to him, and Ronen has come to understand that this is itself a kind of hello, a thing they have built out of nothing but repetition and turns taken in the correct order.

A freier, his mother would say, is someone who gives away something for nothing [10, 12].

But Ronen has been paying into something. He just doesn't have the word for it in either language.

At last: the front. Vasquez looks up.

"The Suncrest are done," Vasquez says [8]. "But I got Cal Reds in the truck [6, 7]. Not out yet."

Ronen blinks. "The truck."

Vasquez is already walking. He comes back with a flat of peaches so ripe the smell arrives before he does — the good ones, the back-of-the-truck ones, the ones that never touch the table [6].

"On me," Vasquez says. "You been standing there since eight" [1].

And this is the moment. This is where the story is supposed to turn, where patience is repaid, where the freier is revealed all along to have been the wise man [10].

Ronen looks at the peaches. Then he takes out his wallet and pays full price, plus a tip, and thanks him twice.

Because he isn't waiting in line to win. He never was. He's waiting because someone has to be the person who keeps the line a line — otherwise it's just a crowd of people, all of them very clever, none of them getting any peaches.

He walks to his car with the flat balanced on his forearms like something sleeping.

He eats one before he's out of the parking lot. It runs down his wrist to his elbow [6].

Freier, he thinks, entirely happily, and takes another bite [9, 12].
